Key points to retain.

Power describes the instantaneous rate at which equipment uses or supplies energy. Energy accumulates that power over time.

  • A 2 kW appliance operating for half an hour uses 1 kWh.
  • Two sites may use the same energy while having very different power peaks.
  • Cable, inverter and battery design requires a clear distinction between kW and kWh.

Power: “how fast?”

Kilowatts measure instantaneous power: the capacity or demand of a motor, air conditioner, generator, inverter or PV array.

Energy: “how much in total?”

Kilowatt-hours measure accumulated quantity. They depend on average power and operating time.

Peak demand

Several items starting together can create a high peak even when daily energy remains moderate.

Power affects equipment, protection and network; energy affects bills, autonomy and storage capacity.

01Does a 500 W panel produce 500 Wh per day?

No. 500 W is reference power; daily energy depends on irradiance, temperature, losses and time.

02Why are batteries described in kWh and kW?

kWh states stored energy; kW states the power that can be delivered or absorbed.

03Can a bill show kW?

Depending on the contract it may include subscribed or measured demand as well as kWh.
